Rental Bikes for Any Ride

Roanoke, Virgina has cycling options for all riders. We have everything from car-free bike paths, quiet and scenic paved and gravel roads, and miles of mountain bike trails. Cardinal Bicycle has premium rental bikes—including e-bikes—to meet the needs of any rider.  

Just decide what kind of riding you would like to do, and we will match you up with the perfect bike. All rentals come with a helmet, pedals, and repair kit. We also have car racks and cycling computers to help you transport your bike and find your way around. (Please note, we do not allow our rental bikes to be transported on any rack where the bikes hang from the frame. These types of racks can cause damage to the bikes.)

Roanoke Greenways and Bike Paths

We have comfort bikes and kids’ bikes that are perfect for a day of cruising along Roanoke’s scenic bike paths and Greenways. The Roanoke River Greenway is about half a mile from our store. Once you are on the Greenway, you can ride car-free for over 20 miles.

Road and Gravel Riding

Roanoke offers miles of low-traffic and scenic riding on both pavement and gravel. We have great options straight from the shop, or you can easily drive to one of the many popular destinations nearby.

Mountain Biking

Roanoke area trails are a destination of their own. We have everything from beginner trails at the lowers of Carvins Cove, to technical backcountry exploring. You can even ride straight from our shop to the base of Mill Mountain. We have rental bikes to meet any riding style—including e-mountain bikes.

Bike Rental FAQ

Where do I ride?

Roanoke is home to hundreds of miles of incredible trails. We recommend taking a look at the Cardinal Bicycle Suggested Rides page and planning a ride before you show up. Not all trails are appropriate for all riders, if you have a question call the shop and we will do our best to point you in the right direction.   

What happens if I have a mechanical issue or get a flat?

Cardinal Bicycle is not responsible for bicycle recovery or on-site repair. If you have a mechanical issue on the trail, you are responsible for the repair and recovery of the bicycle. Flat kits and pumps can be requested at pickup. 

Do you have insurance?

Yes, Cardinal Bicycle offers in-house insurance to protect your rental bike in the event of damage sustained during a ride. Insurance is optional and may be purchased at the time of renting or in-store. Our plan covers up to $3,000 of damage and does not cover theft or loss of bike or inappropriate transportation. 

What if I want to rent TODAY?

Walk-in rentals are welcome. Walk-in rentals are weather dependent. Same day rentals are first come, first served. We recommend making e-bike reservations the day before. We do not guarantee full batteries on same day e-bike rentals.  

What if the bike says it’s not available? 

If a bike is listed as unavailable online, it has been booked and is not available for rent.

Can I rent a bike for my upcoming race?

Rental bikes are not to be used for any races or events. Charges may be added for any customer who has used a rental in a race or event. We do allow rentals for Cardinal-hosted events such as Gravel Camp and the Gravel Gathering.

Do you rent e-bikes?  

Yes, and better yet, Roanoke is e-bike friendly! We recommend making e-bike reservations the day before. We do not guarantee full batteries on same day e-bike rentals.

What should I bring?  

Wear clothing that you are comfortable wearing to ride and appropriate shoes for cycling. You should also bring a hydration pack or water bottle and some snacks. We can supply pedals and helmets, or you are welcome to bring your own. Bikes are equipped with flat repair kits. 

What does my rental come with?  

Bikes are equipped with pedals of your choosing, a flat repair kit, and a helmet. Select your preferred options on the online form at the time of reservation.  

How do I transport my rental?

Transportation is the responsibility of the renter. We do not permit rental bikes to be transported on hanging style hitch racks or trunk racks. These racks do not secure bikes appropriately and can result in damage to the bike and your vehicle. Any damage to bikes as a result of improper transportation will result in repair charges. We offer tray-style bike rack rentals to help you safely transport your rental bike.

What’s the cancellation policy?  

Bikes changed or cancelled less than 48 hours before a rental will be charged a $30 fee per bike. No Call or no Shows will incur a $30 fee. Cancellation fees do not apply for weather related cancellations.  

What if I am late returning?

Bikes that are returned past the agreed upon time will be subject to a $100 late fee per bike. Bikes should never be left unsupervised before opening or after closing for return.  If unattended bikes are stolen, the responsibility lies with the renter.

What's the weight limit for riders?

All of our rental bikes have a weight limit of 275 lbs.

What are the rental hours?

Rental bikes are available daily Tuesday-Saturday. Rentals start at store opening hours. and must be returned by closing the same day. View store hours here. Multi-day rentals are available!

Are multi-day rentals available?

One, two, and three-day rentals are available. If you would like a bike longer than three days, please email dan@cardinalbicycle.com
