20K for the Greenway

20K for the Greenway

Join us for a fun, untimed 20k or 20-mile bicycle ride to benefit Pathfinders for Greenways, PedalSafe ROA, and the Roanoke Parks Foundation. This event is designed to encourage people of all ages and abilities to celebrate, explore, and enjoy one of Roanoke’s greatest assets — our city’s system of greenways and parks.

The 20K is the bicycle equivalent of a 5K run, which is a great goal for beginners, kids, families, and folks getting back in the saddle, or anyone who wants to support our greenways. New for this year, for those who want a longer ride, we have a 20-mile option that uses the recently-opened new section of Greenway.

Last year, we raised over $2,000 for Pathfinders for Roanoke Valley Greenways and PedalSafe ROA. Thanks to everyone who joined us for 20K for the Greenway in June 2023, we hope to see you back this year!

Route Details

New for this year--we will have two distance options.

  • 20k Classic Route: The 20K is the bicycle equivalent of a 5K run--which is a great goal for beginners, kids, families, folks getting back in the saddle, or anyone who wants to support cycling in our area. Riders will depart from Cardinal Bicycle, ride the Greenway to the Bennington Trailhead, and turn around and come back. Riders will have one aid station at the Bennington Trailhead where they can stop for drinks and snacks.
  • 20-Mile Greenway Adventure: This is a scenic and flat car-free route along the Roanoke River Greenway. Riders will depart from Cardinal Bicycle, ride the Greenway to the Bennington Trailhead, turn around and ride to the Cook Avenue Trailhead in Salem, and then make the return trip to Cardinal Bicycle. Riders will have one aid station at the Bennington Trailhead where they can stop for drinks and snacks, and a second aid station at mile 11.

This is an un-timed ride, so if you ever feel like you need to turn around and cut it short, you can! Not sure what route is right for you? You can switch your entry at any time before registration closes.

About our Organizations

Cardinal Bicycle now has two locations to better serve Southwest Virginia, the original Orange Ave. location which has been open since 1977 and the new Grandin Village location in the former Mick-or-Mack. The Grandin Village ride center offers a full lunch counter, coffee service, and bar and also has showers, lockers, and and the most experienced service staff in the region.

Pathfinders for Greenways was incorporated in 1997 to be a non-profit organization to involve citizens in development of the greenway network. Pathfinders provides a forum for involvement of volunteers, coordination of work days, greenway promotional events, and fund raising. The Pathfinders have been effective in building and maintaining natural surface trails. They donate 3-5,000 hours of volunteer service each year, have purchased over $60,000 worth of trail building equipment, and bought and donated the Hinchee Trail to Roanoke County in 2019. Pathfinders’ trail projects include trails at Carvins Cove, Green Hill Park, Read Mountain Preserve, Poor Mountain Preserve, Waid Park, Natural Bridge, and Mill Mountain Park.

PedalSafe ROA is a charitable, volunteer-led organization located in Roanoke, Virginia. They formed in 2022 with the goal of advancing safe cycling for all in the Roanoke Valley. Their mission is to promote Roanoke as a livable community by improving the safety, convenience and acceptance of cycling for all people.
